Stellar Evolutionary Models: challenges from observations of stellar systems
We briefly review some constraints† for stellar models in various mass regimes and evolutionary stages as provided by observational data from spectroscopy to multi-wavelenghts photometry. The accuracy of present generation of stellar models can be significantly improved only through an extensive comparison between theory and observations.
متن کاملDistances from Stellar Kinematics for Peculiar Virgo Cluster Spiral Galaxies
We present distance estimates for eleven peculiar Virgo cluster spiral galaxies based on measurements of the stellar kinematics of their central 2 kpc. Stellar circular velocities were obtained using two-integral dynamical models. Distances were obtained by comparing, at each radius, the stellar circular velocities with synthetic Hα rotation curves derived from NIR Tully-Fisher relations. The r...
متن کاملA Spectroscopic Technique for Measuring Stellar Properties of Pre–Main Sequence Stars
We describe a technique for deriving effective temperatures, surface gravities, rotation velocities, and radial velocities from high resolution near–IR spectra. The technique matches the observed near–IR spectra to spectra synthesized from model atmospheres. Our analysis is geared toward characterizing heavily reddened pre–main sequence stars but the technique also has potential applications in...
متن کاملStellar Abundance Observations
Groundand space-based observations of stellar heavy element abundances are providing a clearer picture of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. A large number of (r)apid and (s)low neutron capture process elements, including the first Hubble Space Telescope observations of Pt, Os, Pb and Ge, have been identified in metal-poor, galactic halo stars. In the very low metallicity (i.e. [Fe/H] < –2.0...
متن کاملSpectroscopic distances of nearby ultracool dwarfs
We present updated results of spectroscopic follow-up observations of a sample of 45 M dwarf candidates identified by Phan-Bao et al. (2003) based on the DENIS photometry and proper motion measurements. Forty one of these are nearby late-M dwarfs (d<30 pc) with spectral types ranging from M5.0 to M8.5 computed from the spectral indices. One contaminant is probably an F-G main sequence star redd...
